BS Johnson
May 30, 2004

Pleased to see that there is finally to be a biography of BS Johnson, a review of which can be found at Guardian Unlimited. Since I first read Christie Malry's Own Double Entry there haven't been, as far as I was aware, any of his other works in print. But this biography, by Jonathan Coe, is to be followed by an Omnibus of three other novels in June... Will "Albert Angelo" have the holed pages to allow the reader to choose the order that they read the chapters in though?

There are some varied and interesting links and articles over at kempa.com. One of which is this link to Pat Lawlor Design. A presentation on how they came up with the design for the Monopoly pinball game... They are probably more famous for the design of the Addams Family game where "Thing" reaches out and pick's up the ball [you know the one!] but still interesting if you've ever fantasised about creating your own pinball game? Not that I ever have of course!!!

I stumbled across this site because I was looking for an image of a Sinclair ZX Spectrum and there's one amongst a series of articles on locked grooves and vinyl data... anyway, there's loads of well researched and fascinating "did you know" type material for down the pub on this site. I was particularly amused by the tale of a record that used Morse Code, to replace some offending lyrics, being banned from radio because the only people that could understand it were Boy Scouts!

Fancy sending your own offensive Morse messages? Then you need this Morse Translator.

THX 1138 DVD Release
May 28, 2004

I found a better link for the first George Lucas movie THX 1138... via sashafrerejones.com [I think!!!]. THX 1138 is set for release on DVD and goes on [re?] release in cinema's this September, but I don't know what region that's referring to??? Which may only be news to me I suppose. Anyone know when "Performance" is due on DVD?

Just been looking at the stats for this page [539 visitors since I started counting on March 25th!] and oddly enough two people came to this site by typing "pretty schoolgirls in their panties" into web.ask.com yesterday! One in Kelowna [British Columbia apparently], Canada, the other in Rhode Island, but only 2.5 hours apart, which allowing for time zones may or may not mean they have a bizarre synchronicity... You two should meet!!!

I assume my post on April 29th regarding Japanese vending machines produced the results. Bet you were disappointed guys... You'll be even more pissed off if you do the same search again and get this blog as the result :)

Actually, I've just worked it out and BC and RI are 3 hours apart, so there was almost a 6 hour difference. Enough time for someone to fly from one to the other and do the same search maybe???

I did the search myself too and I can't believe that this site came out at the top of the list. That's mad...

Geek Dolls and Audio Jelly
May 25, 2004

This made me smile... The GeekMan Action Figure... Not quite sure who Happyworker.com are aiming these at, but still. Maybe they could do a range of characters from Douglas Coupland novels.

More of a Rick Smith interview for a change but pop over to audiohead.net to glean a few Underworld facts you didn't already know, even if you're sad like me... but it's far too short. Quite an interesting site though, which I don't recall stumbling across before, found via dirty.org.

Had an e-mail from Audiojelly suggesting I have a look at the beta version of their new download website...

Most interesting part of which is their remix and demos submissions, which I think I'll be giving a go. It's all dance stuff of some sort...

Here I am!
May 24, 2004

Been a bit busy in the analogue world for the last week... so no posts. Haven't even had time to read anyone elses... It seems Andy Kaufman did return after all.

Popped in to see the Paul Catherall exhibit at Clapham Art Gallery... which didn't really have a lot in it. Also had a quick drink in BarLocal on Clapham Southside which is a cool little bar.

Been working on some new material in Reason when I've had a moment and wondering about buying the Creative Essentials from Zero G... even upgrading to Reason 2.5... I like the look of the Vocoder in that version! Liam Howlett from The Prodigy waxes lyrical about Reason at Propellerheads website.

And if studiofreaks review of the new vocaloid software is anything to go by... I'm going to want one of those too!

Things To See And Do
May 12, 2004

These are more to remind myself to book some tickets... Marianne Faithfull is in the Tom Waits/William S. Burroughs penned "Black Rider" at the Barbican from May 17 - June 12 and Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer [seen the movie?] is on at the Albery Theatre, starring Diana Rigg

Things magazine [again!] mention a forthcoming exhibition on Fantasy Architecture at the Hayward Gallery... But on further investigation I think it may be their exhibition that is off on tour... so I might mosey over and take a look in the Gallery and checkout the Waterloo Sunset interactive space that's been there for a year or two but, as usual, I've only just heard of.

Made in Sheffield
May 11, 2004

Could Made in Sheffield be the sister film to it's Pennine opposite 24 Hour Party People? The DVD was released yesterday and is available from the, not highly informative website. It's a documentary charting the rise of electronic music in Sheffield from 77-82. There's more in this Guardian Unlimited feature by Romo stalwart Simon Price.

Saw Performance [see entry below] last night at the Electric Cinema... what a fantastic place. bar, armchairs, footstalls, excellent decor [restored to it's original Edwardian slendor]... If you're in the area, check out the Mau Mau bar down the road a piece as well. The cinema has a nice bar, but it's a tad pricey... And the Thai Market a few yards down and across the road does the best Thai food I've had. And it's cheap. But it's best to book.

Speaking of Performance there is a vaguely relevant article on symmetry in the current edition of the Tate gallery's magazine TateEtc. And talking of the Tate, there's also an piece on Edward Hopper prior to their major exhibition, opening on May 27th.

Paul Catherall At Clapham Art Gallery
May 10, 2004

Just found out that there is a Paul Catherall exhibition running at the Clapham Art Gallery. I saw the work he did for the Transport for London Posters there. Nice [very] little gallery. It ends on May 29th. Lino cuts have never been my thing really, but these have changed my mind...

Thank You Things!
May 06, 2004

Much thanks to Things Magazine for their brief mention yesterday, which resulted in the most traffic this site has ever had in a day. Alright, it isn't going to make 34SP.com, who host this site, shut me down but it made me smile... thanks also to reflections in d minor for their mention, even if they did suggest the sight might be geeky... Whatever gave them that idea?

Joy of joys... Sam has just come home waving a copy of Time Out at me, informing me that the BFI are to re-release the Donald Cammell/Nicholas Roeg film, Performance [my most favourite film ever], in selected cinema's this week.

Obviously the place to see it is the Electric Cinema, just around the corner[ish] from Powis Square, in Portobello Road, Notting Hill.

Sounds Unlikely...
May 05, 2004

Came by some interesting links to articles on Walter Murch via rodcorp yesterday. particularly, although I haven't read everything yet, the LA Weekly interview with author Michael Ondaatje [dating back to September 2002].

Murch was responsible for the sound in the film adaptation of Ondaatje's English Patient as well as George Lucas' THX 1138, Apocalypse Now, Gimme Shelter and Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, which is what caught my eye. Having recently seen the film on DVD and been impressed by the quality of the sound montages.

Rodcorp also drew my attention to some of the quirkiest recordings I've come across for a while... Best title must be Symphony#2 For Dot Matrix Printers. It's by Xerophonics. Recombining the sampled sounds of copying machines, this is for fans of the cut-up, reorganized sounds of artists such as Christian Marclay and Stock, Hausen, and Walkman... It's available through e-music.com

Before Andy Kaufman died on May 16, 1984, he told several friends that he was planning to fake his death, disappear and return in 20 years, precisely. So, on May 16, 2004, Comic Relief will present Andy Kaufman: Dead or Alive? at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip.
