A Slightly Smaller Splash
July 22, 2005
A new batch of original art works [well almost original - see below!] from Britart.com [images reproduced without permission - but hopefully someone will visit them via here and purchase something] ... Before that though.
I had a nice e-mail from Louise and Michelle, organisers of the Brighton Sand Sculpture Event - And I have corrected the child entrance price [it was £4 not £3]. And I have finally [I hope] got all the archive links working properly. Yesss!

Uninvited 2004 Rebecca Knapp Acrylic on canvas 40" x 30" £800/$1540
BUY REBECCA KNAPP
This is odd in that all of her other images are of cars - yet this just adds a character to Hockney's A Bigger Splash, which I've cropped to match here. I can only assume that the cause of the splash hasn't come back to the surface! Still cheaper than the original, I bet!
I really like these, by Kate Marshall...
I Could Gobble You Up #3 2004 Kate Marshall Acrylic on board 44" x 44" £1150/$2210

Various Bits Of Nonsense

You can generate your own Baudot code just like the Coldplay X&Y album cover here
My one says Coldshit!
Ogaki Kyoritsu, a Japanese Bank, is introducing fruit machine style games which run while the ATM processes its more mundane transactions! So it says at the BBC . I wonder if your cash comes out on a cascade of coins if you win!
Also at the BBC - the Digital Citizens series this week continues with the blogger.

London For Free

Went to the Frida Kahlo exhibit at Tate Modern on Friday too, expecting all those images you see in every article on Kahlo and pleasantly surprised by the ones I have never seen before. Self-Portrait in a Velvet Dress [Left] is amazing - The eyes!
After the events of the past week or so its good to enjoy a hot weekend in London - Made special by two free events in Lambeth.
Firstly the Urban Art event in Josphine Avenue, SW2. It's a treat to have an event like this on your doorstep. It was my first visit to this independent art fair but one I look forward to attending next summer.
The second was the Lambeth Country Fair - London - There can't be many parts of this country that you can stand on an approximation of an English village green listening to cider fuelled traditional English folk music struggling to be heard over dub reggae alongside the aroma of jerk chicken. And that's why I'll never live anywhere else. Unless I make a small fortune and pootle off to a Greek island one day!
And to end a perfect weekend, the sun going down on the South Circular shouldn't look this good!

Just noticed this on Banksy.co.uk
On Sunday 26th June at 5.35pm a graffiti'd toilet was tied to some helium balloons and set free while Brian Wilson played Good Vibrations on the pyramid stage. It travelled due East at approximately 3 knots and has not been seen since. The first person to find the toilet and email the word written on the forehead of the inflatable doll stuck inside, is this months winner. mailto:winner.treasure@banksy.co.uk I assume it hasn't been found yet? For some reason that amused me no end!

Respect And Enigma's

Not the best picture my cameraphone has ever taken - But it's all there was to hand. I didn't bank on the sun being behind the clock tower! Thought it would make quite a memorable image - Not that the world is short of pictures of Big Ben but this was taken on the first strike of Noon to mark the start of the 2 minutes silence for the victims of last Thursdays events in London...
On a lighter note. This is a great piece of work by some aliens or other on Telegraph Hill, Hampshire! Info from Megalithic.co.uk Nearest Town: Winchester Nearest Village: Chilcomb Latitude: 51.049893N Longitude: 1.258109W Very Vague Google map: Telegraph Hill
I also like this Turing Machine made from Lego! Read Andrew Hodges wonderful book on Turing if you don't know anything about him.

It's In The Sand!
July 13, 2005
Bloody hell!
How many people are going to this Sand Sculpture thing? My stats have doubled since I posted that and 60% of the traffic is from searches for sand, Brighton, sculpture etc... And from all over the world - I didn't realise it was so popular!

Just signed up to the Bleep Download site [after reading about it on anti-mega] - Where you can download a selection of electronic music from a variety of labels...
And they let you put this little web tool [below] on your site if there's something you like enough to promote yourself - Thought I'd give this Jamie Lidell a go... There's a hell of a lot of Si Begg that I don't have on there too. Uh Oh!

Brighton Sand Sculpture Festival 2005
July 05, 2005
This made me laugh when I first read it. Brighton must have the pebbliest beach in Britain but it is going to host a sand sculpture festival this summer!
But... 10,000 tons of special sand will be shipped from Holland [they do good sand apparently, amongst other things] and deposited in Brighton Marina so that the 60 artists, from all over the world, can recreate the wonders of Ancient Egypt! As you do. I assume this won't be in the part of the Marina where the boats are moored!?!? There is a flickr page in anticipation of the event - not sure where the photo's already posted there are supposed to be from - As it hasn't started yet - But that's one of them above!
The festival runs from July 14 to September 11 11am to 8pm £6 entry for adults £5 for concessions £4 for children aged 4-12 under-4s go free... Just don't let them try and kick them over when their finished!!!

Pancam Post It Piece
July 01, 2005
 Found this via kottke.org
Mental Hygeine have a "how to" on creating post-it murals! They did this Elvis one at work!
And I found this via We Make Money Not Art
A piece on the Royal College of Art show 2005, which ends on July 3rd.
The Pancam, by Mark Hauenstein
Is apparently a low cost digital camera that makes infinitely long panoramic images. Once attached to the window of a moving vehicle it captures a stream of images similar to a video camera. These images are then assembled by a PC application that links together the central strip of each consecutive frame into one single long strip. The result being a map of the journey undertaken, including spatial and visual traces as well as temporal information that reveal the changes of speed and movement of the vehicle. The whole image can then be printed on a long roll of paper on an ordinary printer or as strips on standard sheets of paper.
It reminds me of the images in DOGBOY – An exhibition of Karl Hyde [of Underworld] photos that I saw at the Tomato Gallery a few years ago. He shot entire rolls of film without winding the roll on fully so that they formed one continuous collage...
Which reminds me, I read earlier this week that Rick and Karl from Underworld will be providing the soundtrack to BREAKING AND ENTERING. A new film, currently inproduction, written and directed by Anthony Minghella. Previously announced cast members include Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, Robin Wright Penn, Martin Freeman, Ray Winstone and Mark Benton.
Sounds promising!
I might add imdb links to that lot later!
