Albooks?
February 23, 2007
Albooks are book and CD combo's of which Dusty in Memphis is but one. This is Dusty Springfield's magnum opus, complete with a book by Warren Zanes, once of the Del Fuegos. He explores his own love affair with this record, digging deep into the album's Memphis roots and talking to several of the key characters involved in it's making.
The books are from the 331/3 [check out their Blog] series, published by Continuum Books. There are more books in the series than there are Albooks, so far. Amazon has a list of 33 1/3 titles. Many of these titles are forthcoming so hopefully they will all end up bundled as Albooks at some point.
I'm not clear as to whether it's Rough Trade that have bundled the two together or a company called Albooks. I've only seen them on the RT [£14.99] site so far and Continuum don't mention them.
Two more from the London Art Fair list then... Just briefly, Shirley Kaneda and Marc Vaux, particularly the Lightcube series - follow the link and see for yourself. These are three dimensional objects but there is no light involved. Just paint.
OK then... That's me for the weekend. The next time I post something here Trev will be 40 and I'm sure I'll be feeling the worse for it!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TREV!

Beardy-ness
February 21, 2007
The Ginger DJ sent me a link to this Beardyman clip last week. I've since found there is a Beardyman MySpace page too [no surprise there I suppose], not to mention his own site. Beardyman.co.uk is a nice bit of flash but the navigation could do with a bit of a rethink. Still, the Beardy one is a wonder... take a look.
Finally got our The Rapture tickets from the Post Office this morning... at last. Only a week to go for that one. I'm just amusing myself with a bit of Detroit nostalgia that is Underground Resistance' Riot EP, which I downloaded from e-Music last night. Re-released after 14 years!
Better put another couple of artists up here then [from the London Art Fair list]... Marilène Oliver's deconstruction's of the human form include a collaboration with cardiac surgeon Francis Wells. They worked together to deconstruct Leonardo da Vinci's famous anatomical drawing, The Great Lady, then reconstructed it as a three dimensional combination of sculpture and MRI scans. Whilst Beverly Fishman's work seems to take the inspiration for her mixed media works from laser copies... The image above, Untitled 23, is silkscreen, silkscreened vinyl and collage on powder-coated metal.

I Don't Think You're Ready For This Jelly Baby
February 18, 2007
Another two weeks slip by unblogged. I can't even say I've been doing anything that exciting... Just too busy/tired to type anything up.
A few random things to mention then... Marine Boy cropped up at the tangent of a conversation the other day. I was amazed to realise I could still remember the melody to the theme tune. Not sure I can make it to either of the London Performances of Belleville Rendezvous Live, which is a shame. I will be able to get to is Jeppe Hein's installation, The Curve, at the Barbican. The Curve is a kind of rollercoaster that fills the entire 80 metre gallery. When visitors enter the gallery a white PVC ball is launched and rolls, corkscrews and camel backs it's way around the structure. It's there from 9th February - 29th April so I'm sure I'll make it at some point. Oh yeah! it's free too.
So, a couple more artist links before I crawl off to my pit. Got to get up early enough to get down the Post Office and join the queue to see what it is that needed a signature and couldn't be left the other day! Hopefully it's The Rapture tickets that still haven't shown up.
Firstly, Sally Temple's abstracts. Secondly, Mauro Perucchetti. These structures just can't be done any justice by tiny online images. The Jelly Baby, above, is part of this Summer's Wellcome Collection exhibit, opposite Euston Station.

Friday's Finds
February 03, 2007
I stumbled across a few, tenuously linked, things on-line yesterday. Google featured in the first couple. Remix 2.0 is an intriguing combination of music, video and Google Maps!
TechCrunch reports on rumours that Google are working on using Google Earth-related technology to create an application similar to Second Life. This Metaverse concept popularized by Snow Crash, the Neal Stephenson book, was part of the inspiration for Google Earth. So claims John Hanke, Director of Google Earth.
Next, a couple of collaborative projects. Penguin is launching its first wiki and in a project called A Million Penguins they've created a space where anyone can contribute to the writing of a novel and anyone can edit anyone else's writing. Whilst NetBehaviours Do It With Others project is a contemporary take on the past Mail Art endeavours. There is an open call for contributions from 31st January to 28th February 2007 via the NetBehaviour email list. You can subscribe here. An exhibition will follow at the HTTP Gallery, London, initiated by Furtherfield.org.
Finally, Christian Marclay has an installation, Crossfire, at the White Cube in Hoxton Square from Feb 2nd - March 10th.
Oh! And two more artists that caught my eye at last months London Art Fair... Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, whose work I don't recall being aware of before. But, as she was part of the St. Ives group, I'm sure I must seen some of her work before. The picture, top left is called Cardinal by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. Owned by the Government Art Collection.
Julian Perry. Who has a forthcoming exhibition of garden shed paintings, that we saw a few of and I liked a lot, at Austin/Desmond Fine Art. But not until October this year.

A Migratory Passage!
February 01, 2007
I've just merged my flickr account with my, until then dormant, Yahoo one and gone over to the Google side at Blogger...
All in one day! So far there's little noticeable difference at flickr, bar the odd log-in going to a Yahoo page. The Blogger pages I've passed on my way here already seem to be developing something of a kindergarten-s[m]urf quality though!
Blogger I may butch out... but flickr? Well, I'll be surprised if they don't implement changes enough to drive me off way before the 2 years I recently signed up to are done.
So... those artists I liked the look of at the last London Art Fair continues with...
First, another Ingleby Gallery artist... Winston Roeth. Whose tempera panel paintings are striking from a distance but up close play optical tricks drawing you further into colour and grids.
Secondly, Neil Canning. Whose works look to me like "drive-by painting". That's his "Brecon" top left. I like a lot of these works. They give the impression that they were done from a passing car [or two]... Which most people would probably consider a criticism!
If anyone is remotely bothered... Sam and I had an "unofficial" pinch/punch" contest last year. Which she won hands down!
Well, we've continued it this year... January, of course, is null and void. This is due to the staggering around at parties being kissy/huggy effect. Sam got first strike this morning and is now 1-0 up, in a best off 11, 2007 challenge.
I'll keep you posted!
