Mad Dreams #2
November 06, 2007

Earlier in the week [Monday I think] I had been trapped behind an endless wall of darkness picked out with pinpricks of neon light. These pinpricks were holes and it was my job to connect these together with some sort of luminous stretchy material. I think I must have been able to float in this as I don't recall having any difficulty reaching any of them. The wall turned out to be the the inside of Wikipedia and it was my task to join all of the hyperlinks together!

Each morning this week I've woken up, exhausted, with neck and shoulder pain, splitting headaches and a sore throat and lungs from the coughing. It's like the events in these dreams are happening to an alternate me in a place similar to here that has evolved ever so slightly differently and occasionally these events reach me when I'm asleep. I often dream of the same locations or if it is a different location I know that somewhere from a previous dream is nearby. I often dream of real places that I have lived in but now contain previously undiscovered rooms.

Many years ago I had a dream where I had killed somebody and buried the body in the garden in a shallow grave. It was so realistic I had to get up and check the garden to reassure myself it wasn't true! It wasn't anybody I knew and I don't think I even dreamt the act of doing it, it was just the feeling that it had happened. My dreams can range from absurd to sexual to violent to mundane. I often wake up on the verge of solving something that just slips away as I wake up. Sometimes they carry on when I drift off to sleep and they wake me up again. I'm usually convinced I haven't slept for hours during these but I expect I have and it's just my mind being over active when I go to bed. Like when I used to play Tetris on a Gameboy for ages and then see rotating tumbling shapes as I tried to drift off to sleep.

Who needs Second Life? It's my own Virtual Reality, Metaverse or Matrix [whatever]. All seemingly unmappable and with a warped concept of time. Are places in dreams like movies because you've seen those movies and they are easy points of reference or because those creating them have equaly vivid dreams?

Mad Dream #1
November 05, 2007

The cold I had three weeks ago returned with a vengeance at the beginning of last week, meaning all the things we had planned, including Soulwax, went out of the window. instead I was reduced to catching 30 minute snatches of sleep between coughing fits every night of the week. Consequently I had some pretty mad dreams all week long. So for want of something else to post I thought I'd share them with you here [You lucky. lucky people!]

There is a small white scotty dog I try to photograph in a block of flats but the owner says no... I encounter it again in a lift, alone, going up and down. I try to get out of the lift with it on the correct floor but the lift has turned into a curtain. Beyond the curtain we appear to be in the near future near a railway station. The trains are called monopods [they have this written on them as some sort of large logo] and the station looks to me to be somewhere in Sutton [or maybe it says so]. The station entrance is up a steep hill though with individual pink cable car/ski lift type transportation over head. I am carrying the dog and walk away from the station for a bit but there are tigers along the pavement [on grass verges] so I turn back to the station. I need to go under the station, via an escalator, to get to the correct platform, but the crowds coming up freak the dog out and it jumps free, runs up a down escalator and hides in a photobooth that a guy is trying to fix. I wake up a minute before the alarm is due to go off. There was also a large Chinese restaurant at some point. A converted theatre playing a radio to diners, broadcasting Terry Wogan. All the tables and chairs were within a maze. The toilets were cavernous and the urinals either very deep or raised very high. It's part of a city that appears regularly in my dreams. A city of narrow streets and tall buildings where distances aren't what they seem.

This dream seemed to be a continuation of a previous one the same night, where I am camping with friends. Wales or somewhere near a coast. We had just returned from somewhere and were unpacking when I encountered the dog. The camp is almost on the beach. In the lee of a cliff. A very low, dark cloud is coming from beyond the cliff at incredible speed. I've been trying to photograph the sun, reflected in the sea and idyllic families with buckets and spades, apparently from my past, but there are no clothes to date them as far as I recall, so I'm not sure where I got that from. The cloud thickens and there are random flashes of lightning, like when the big spaceship arrives in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Everybody is looking up, not knowing whether to be excited or terrified. Panic ensues as it passes over and everybody, but our group disappears. I go back to trying to get a photo but I'm told we are packing to leave. We put all our stuff into a barrow or shopping trolley. I get someone to spin me round in it over a vast muddy field, it goes round so fast I leave the ground and Kev is convinced that a filling has flown out of my mouth so we scramble around in the mud looking for it. This is where it seems to cut to the dream I noted previously.
