Juana Be Bacon Something
October 06, 2008 Just trying to sit down and get myself into my OU Course. It started last Wednesday but I've barely had time to look at any of it yet. So, quickly, my excuses are... Chris arrived Friday evening and we spent the rest of it catching up before getting up Saturday to visit Tate Britain for the Francis Bacon exhibit. Really enjoyed it. Big exhibition, very well laid out, insightful room of material Bacon used for inspiration. Sunday, Sam and I went to see Juana Molina at St. Lukes [home of the LSO] in Old Street. A lovely Hawksmoor building with great little concert hall inside. Juana was supported by fellow Domino Records label mate Max Tundra, who I couldn't take seriously at all. His moves seem to have been taken from an old Leo Sayer video and while I'm sure he is a very accomplished musician his material was over-worked and misguided in my opinion. My hopes were raised when he burst into a rendition of So Long, Farewell, from The Sound Of Music, I was very excited. Not because I thought it was an inspired rendition of a classic tune, but because I thought he'd be finished afterwards. Alas not. There was another tune to follow! Juana Molina came onstage looking the most nervous I have ever seen a performer in my life. It came to light after about four numbers that this was her first ever public performance with the bass player and drummer that were accompanying her. There was no reason to worry though, despite a few loops giving her grief it all seemed to go swimmingly as far as I was concerned. The layers of vocal parts were hypnotic and for some reason reminded me of Jane's Addiction [strange though that may seem] at times. I only recognised one track from the two albums that I have so can only assume most of the material was new album, Un Dia, hence the additional musicians. Must get myself a copy. It's out today or tomorrow. Today, we wandered over to help Viv move some bits around in her flat and used that as an excuse to visit Le Cassoulet, in nearby South Croydon, for lunch. The lunch deal is £16.50 for 3 courses and between us we had, escargot, French onion soup and stewed pears & roquefort to start. Followed by blade steak, Old Spot pork and duck & pork cassoulet. Then cheese, creme brulee and chocolate for dessert. The only disappointment was a lack of stomach space. A great deal but then, when are you likely to be in South Croydon? Well, now you have a reason. OK, now on with that course work.
