20 Hours In Cornwall
September 21, 2008

St. IvesRecovering from the visit to Amsterdam took a couple of days but I was just about back to normal in time to for James' Party at Paul & Sarah's new gaff in Brighton. 18 hours later we emerged blinking and headed back to London, back to square one!

Luckily we had an overnighter in St. Ives to recover, if you can call, two consecutive 6 hour train journeys recovering. Saying that, it shot by actually, reading Painting The Warmth Of The Sun and texting Brighkite with updates from every station we passed through en route.

We stayed at the Backpackers Hostel, ate at The Mex. We got up early to a bright sunny day for a change and had breakfast in the sun at the Porthmeor Beach Cafe.

The Tate Gallery is just across the road from the cafe so we were one of the first to arrive. The Dawn Of A Colony and Modernism In St. Ives exhibits were only small unfortunately but still worth the journey, the paintings from 1811-1888 tying in nicely with what I had read on my journey up. Crossing Lower Gallery 2, with its views of the bay, we spotted dolphins. Ironically not long after Sam had wondered aloud whether they were often spotted in these parts and I suspected not! Wrong again then. As the sun was still out we decided to get some lunch at the Portminster Cafe before setting off back to London.

On Saturday we had lunch on the National Theatre Terrace with a selection of their mezes before heading off to find the Seizure installation on Harper Road. It's a bit of a trek from the South Bank, almost in the New Kent Road. After getting our wellies we queue to enter the condemned flat. It's amazing. I had seen pictures of the blue, copper sulphate crystals, but the experience of being surrounded by them twinkling is otherworldly. Amazingly there had been approximately 300 visitors that day. It's on until November 2nd. pay them a visit.

Back at the Southbank we had a quick stroll round the stalls of the Slow Food Market, which I thought might have been a bigger event but had plenty of variety. I had to have some hog roast.
