Streatham Artists
September 12, 2008

Savage PencilJust got back from a slightly private view, practically on my doorstep. The Streatham Artists Open Studio is exactly a mile on foot according to Google Maps. There is a fair old collection of artists' studios behind Sainsbury's in Streatham Hill including a couple of names you may have already heard of.

Lucie Bennett has had quite bit of TV exposure including BBC2's The Culture Programme as well as The Apprentice in 2005, which documented the run-up to her private view at The Gallery at 28 Cork Street, in September 2004. And she has been mentioned here a few times as I own a print of hers that Sam bought me a couple of years back. The other is Savage Pencil [aka Edwin Pouncey], whose cartoons/illustrations have graced the pages of the NME and The Wire amongst others. His latest work is for a collection of clear vinyl records [see picture] with laser etchings, see Pitchfork for details, and judging by the work on paper the records should look awesome. You can order them via Forced Exposure. Both were there, although engaged in conversations with others.

We were unfashionably early and lot of artists hadn't arrived yet. Those that were present included photographer, Ann Pownall, who we had a nice little chat and a glass of wine with. Tim Sutton, who invited us and runs the Urban Art Fair. Tim has had his fair share of the limelight recently as well. His Bingo Girls series of paintings have landed him on the BBC News and Robert Elms radio show. Also, David Pepper, Govinda Sah and Emma Condliffe. None of whom appear to have websites of their own.

The studios remain open over this weekend, so get yourself down there and buy something.
