There's No Justice
October 28, 2008 We went to see Justice DJ at new club matter on Saturday night. It's a great venue but didn't quite meet the expectations I had got from write ups. Yes the graphics do appear to be projected on a lot of walls but not 360 degrees of them and not all of the time. And yes the sound throbs through the floor in a spectacular fashion and does indeed appear to pan around the full spectrum of the room. At least I guess that was the explanation for some of the panning weirdness and inexplicable "quiet" moments. The sound was clear and despite being loud you could easily have a conversation with the person next to you. We got there about 11.30 and pretty much waltzed in, after trotting round what appeared to be most of the O2, under the glare of the lights from Canary Wharf. Sam spotted the running order as we headed upstairs to see if the bar was less busy up there. It said Justice would be on from 2.00 - 3.30. I think it was So Me, on before them, who I know nothing about. But got us going until Justice arrived with very little fanfare. Unfortunately, whoever it was on before them had pretty much exhausted all the audio gymnastics that the venue is capable of and were better DJs as well. We gave them about 30 minutes I reckon before fighting through the crowd back upstairs to take advantage of the proximity of the bar! As soon as we suspected that Justice were over we left. About 5 minutes after leaving we were on a Thames Clipper waiting to the be whisked back along the Thames to Westminster. By 4.00 we were there buying the morning papers and getting a taxi back to Tulse Hill in the rain. fantastic. I'd go again if someone better is playing. Justice were great live but they are less than average as DJs. My only gripe about the venue was having to queue up the stairs in order to get into the loo's, although that was only once. I'd like to look down on the crowd on the from that VIP bridge two floors up over the dancefloor. We managed to get a decent nights sleep in before meeting Trev, Pom and Jake down the Railway and heading over to Kev & Karols for a Sunday Roast; So I assumed I just had a slow burning hangover when I got round there, but by the time I got home I had a temperature that kept me awake all night and by the morning I had a hacking cough, a bastard headache and neck glands so swollen I could barely speak. Where did that come from? There's no justice. I'm still suffering now and hope I'll be able to make it to the Barbican for A Disappearing Number on Thursday. Would quite like to pop in and see John Squire: Noise at the SW1 Gallery before it's over as well. November 16th I think. I'm sure I'll be OK by then.
