Mash And Merge
August 26, 2008 I've become strangely addicted to blip.fm, which is a kind of a merging of Twitter and Last.fm. I assume more Last.fm related features will appear at a later date, but it's pretty well integrated with Twitter already. As I expected my phone is frustrating many of my efforts at playing with any locative stuff so I've turned my attention to ping.fm [my beta invite finally appeared] which is a universal [well, almost] updating site where I can ping tweets, status updates to MySpace and Facebook [and many more] and update my blog, via e-mail, GTalk or various widgets. Again, not brilliant from the Viewty and I'm still not that sure it'll be much use to me apart from using it from a mobile device. If I can get to a PC I can update the other sites anyway. There is a mobile application as well but I was hoping to be able to send updates via SMS rather than launch something that needs a WAP connection. Dan Lane has come up with a workaround which I'm trying out now. I've had a quick look at hellotxt as well but it doesn't offer Blogger updates. I'm now awaiting a Brightkite invite to see what that has to offer. It's not an updating service but still a bit of a mash-up of other social networking services by the looks of things. Toying with the idea of going to see Video Games Live 2008. And wish I could stump up the cash to attend Microsoft Remix UK 08 in Brighton. Mind you, judging by my experience with the above tools I might be a bit out of my league there! Categories: Web, Blogging, Media, Technology Comment | Permalink
Get Loaded August 25, 2008 Still recovering from The Stooges at Get Loaded on Clapham Common yesterday. I decided we should get there about 2.00 to avoid queueing which backfired a bit! Viv arrived with Kev about 1.30 [I think] and we called a cab which turned up after about 20 minutes and dropped us at the Windmill where we thought we'd have a quick drink at reasonable prices before we went in. About ten minutes later we overhead someone mention the Soulwax were already on. As it seemed beyond the organisers abilities to publish any "on stage" times on their website [Wireless managed it] I took the running order to be as it was listed. Wrong! After about a 15 minute queue to get in and being mugged the usual £5.00 for a programme we located the Time Out tent [not where it was indicated on the programme]. We caught about the last ten minutes of their Nite Versions set which seemed to consist of them being augmented by a live drummer. But couldn't get into the tent so had to squint from the open sides. They were only allocated 50 minutes! In fact all of the sets were pretty short. Too many acts methinks. So we wandered off to the main stage to see the The Hives who were pretty good given the time of day. It must be odd playing in daylight. Then we went back to the Time Out tent to see Mylo. Again pretty good although he seemed to insist on looping some tracks early on that made them sound like a CD skipping. We caught the end of Metronomy before Mylo came on as well... They were crap. We missed big chunks of Mylo's set by queueing ages for beer. £3.50 for a can of Carlsberg! Served up by women who who would have been more at home selling cakes at a village fete. Very poor. The rest of Mylo's set was accompanied by watching some dubious looking security guards randomly searching people for drugs. I assume they were official but they had no telephone numbers or anything other than a name and the word security on their shirts and ironically a couple of them had baseball caps on with ganja leaf motifs!. So that all went to a good home then. Most events I've been to at Clapham have had heavy handed security. There's no need. Amusingly a guy came up to us to ask if we saw what had happened to a couple of the blokes they had frisked. They had spotted the guards coming and given their stash to him and he wanted to give it back before he was picked on. As he had come over the fence he was doubly anxious! The Gossip were awesome again, with their newly expanded line-up, and the tent was packed. They finished sharpish though as they were as keen to see the The Stooges as anyone else. So as soon as they heard they had started they did Standing In The Way Of Control and we all legged it to the other end of the field. We managed to fight our way to middle of the crowd, but must have missed a few tunes although it was all get a bit hazy by then. There was a lot girlfriends on shoulders stuff going on in front of us so a group of us started pelting them with stuff till they got down. Childish I know but a laugh! Iggy is as lively as ever, for a 61 year old! I hadn't seen him for years and he was just as energetic. Fortunately he didn't show his arse this time, which isn't a pretty sight. The band were tight, the sound was good and we were all standing there in awe for a while just pointing and saying "It's the Stooges"! Great day out apart form the beer prices and security. Needless to say we piled back to Kev & Karol's and drunk into the early hours. Hence the recovering... Off to the pub to watch Man Utd v Portsmouth in a mo though. Can't be any better than being at Fulham on Saturday to see Arsenal lose. Ha Ha Ha! Categories: Music, London Google Map Comment | Permalink
Monday Night Surfing August 18, 2008 I see Fire Eagle is now available for us mortals to play with, so I've signed up and started looking at the apps. My Loki was my first stop and I'm going to try linking it up with the Navizon Virtual GPS on my phone... If it'll work. I'm sure it's all going to end up in another "Wish I had an N95" rant! Some other stuff I've surfed by this evening includes... Face Your Manga. This is supposed to be me! I've been listening to Radio 3's Between The Ears on iPlayer as well. "Symphonies Of Wind Turbines" is the latest episode. They make some weird noises those things. GMapGolf is a nifty idea... If you like golf! And Tickr. A timeline of Flickr images from a particular tag. I also spotted a Dipity link on Fire Eagle so I've signed up for that too. You can aggregate a timeline of your other sources, like Flickr, Last.FM, Blogger, YouTube, Twitter etc. Pretty cool actually! The map is a tad erratic but the timeline looks good. A lot of my stuff has been uploaded en masse and doesn't really reflect a proper timeline yet. Off to see Wall-e tomorrow. Categories: London, Web, Photography, Blogging Comment | Permalink
P For Party August 17, 2008 Party two of August was a little closer to home. After adjourning to Brighton for Mark's festivities last Saturday, it was off to the Artesian Well, Wandsworth Road for Pav's 40th yesterday. With the theme of "P" Kerry & Rob made a batch of Pav masks for those of us too lazy to wear fancy dress. Which were kinda creepy but fun. A lot of folk did make the effort though. Jake came as a priest [Father Dougal like] and there was another preacher. Several policemen and ladies, pirates [Sam & Anne among them], some prisoners, pimps and punks [Pav & Lucy] and a Playboy Bunny. Picture: Jake as priest with Pav mask and borrowed bunny ears. It all seemed to shoot by so quickly and before we knew it we were back at Kev & Karol's and it was 5.00am. I'm sure we got there before then but that's when I next noticed the time. Fun, fun, fun... We managed to drag ourselves home in time for a few hours sleep before hitting the Railway for the afternoon's Premiership action and roast dinners. We're back home recovering now and I'm half watching Cloverfield on TV [that guy's battery should have run out long before the end shouldn't it?] while trying to find the best deal on an HP2133. I think this might be the answer to my mobile blogging dreams. 120GB, with an SD card slot to transfer photos on the move for storage and possible posting. Looking at the Linux installed model. All I'll need is access to my GMail, Calendar and Google Docs along with Blogger via a mobile broadband dongle and I'll be in business. Added GPS would be nice but I'm sure that's possible via USB as well. But then would I be better off with something I can run Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Reason and Ableton on as well? I'm just taken with the aluminium finish and dinky size. Could probably find something cheaper that isn't so small. Currently listening to the marvellous Sonny J [The Mirwais mix of Can't Stop Moving is about to become the tune you can't get away from for the rest of what we laughingly refer to as summer] and Minilogue albums. Don't Choke Chuck August 12, 2008 Just got back from the Chuck Palahniuk reading at the Roundhouse. I was expecting an extract from latest book Snuff but instead we were treated to a unique short story, Loser, about a kid on a game show on acid! This was followed by a Q&A, the majority of which was from some guy whose name I didn't catch who may or may not have been something to do with Borders, who put the event together. For reasons best known to Chuck there were "blow up the inflatable doll" competitions with horror DVDs as prizes. Certainly a different book reading event than I've experienced before. There was a bit of chat about the forthcoming film adaptation of Choke, which Radiohead have apparently scored the music for and stars Sam Rockwell. Got to wait until November for that one in the UK. We arrived about an hour early so had a couple of drinks on the terrace and availed ourselves of the BBQ they had set up out there until it got a bit nippy and consequently tipped down with rain. Which was a shame as it was nice out there, good burgers too. It was a bit of a quiet night [well compared to when we were last there for Underworld anyway] with Alabama 3 playing unplugged in the main auditorium and looking like they may have pulled a smaller crowd than Chuck! Sam spotted Marine Ices across the road when we came out so we got a couple of ice creams for the tube journey home. Boris hasn't banned those yet. I had cherry and Sam had strawberry. Ooh blimey, they were good! I have to go back and pig out on their pizza's and tiramisu. I'm sure the guy introducing Chuck called him Chuck Polo Neck! The Gastro Knight August 04, 2008 Just sat through an interminable Dark Knight in a sold out cinema with no air con after a pretty large meal. It was enjoyable up till the first natural end point of the film, but then they had to stumble about in the dark for 45 minutes or more with what could easily have been the plot of an entirely different film if they had put their minds to it. Thank god for Heath Ledger's performance as it's pretty much the only one in it. And is it me or did Harvey Dent look a little like Ken Barlow? It's that hair! Really like the effect of the ascending screechy note during fight scenes and the way the incidental music would drop out suddenly though. We had to give each other a nudge when Battersea Power Station made an appearance as the exploding warehouse where Rachel meets her end! But overall nowhere near as good as Batman Begins for me. Good to see Matthew Walker's excellent short Operator beforehand though. The meal beforehand was at Gastro, opposite the Clapham Picturehouse. Massive bowls of soup, probably a pint or more in each. I had tomato with basilica and Sam had fish soup. Not a bouillabaisse I don't think. The size of the soups meant that we barely had room for the steak and rabbit we had ordered for our main courses. But we managed. The restaurant couldn't be more French if it was in France. Only gripe was being asked if we would like to see the desert menu before our main course had arrived. Excellent. What with trying to digest that lot and the warmth of the dark cinema it's a good job the film was loud as we may have been sound asleep in no time. In fact I'm off to bed now and will add some links to this later I think. Categories: Food & Drink, Film Comment | Permalink
Yassou August 03, 2008 Well, we're back and people tell me the weather has been glorious! It's grey and dull outside. It's a bit of a comedown compared to temperatures that have been hitting the mid to high 40's regularly in Rhodes. I feel over dressed with this tan! I've spent most of the weekend sifting through the photos I took and have managed to whittle the total down to 140, which are now up on Flickr. Follow the link below. Also had a pile of washing and stuff to do which is now hanging all over the flat. I'm now retrospectively adding posts for the days that we were in Rhodes. Which are mostly lists of places visited, what I read, how hot it was and what we ate and drank. I've done three days but I'm not sure when I'll get to finish the rest or add any useful links. Checking the calendar it's a busy month... Then it's September! Categories: Music, London, Food & Drink, Film See my flickr set: Rhodes 2008 Comment | Permalink
