My Own Personal Android
August 18, 2009

Loving the new phone. I've been loading the G1 with apps, some good, some not so good. I think I've got the hang of conserving battery life as well, which does mean forsaking 3G unless really necessary. My only gripe has been the lack of ringtone volume really.

I've opted for Twitdroid over Twitta for the My Tracks compatibilty. I posted a test journey to My Maps yesterday and was very impressed, no 3G needed there. I flicked the My tracks app on while on the No 2 bus yesterday and left it on for my walk from the bus stop stopping for coffee on the way. I was particularly amused by the average journey time speed etc. Going to be handy whilst walking especially tied in with the geotagging capabilities of the camera, although not the best camera seen on a phone it'll be handy for reference.

I haven't tried tweeting anything locative yet as I'm not sure about that in real time, more for an historical use... But I may be swayed if someone comes up with a compelling argument for it. But better to leave that stuff to Brightkite, which I hae revisited. The GPS is pretty quick and accurate in town and I have just downloaded the incredible Layar, augmented reality app, with its Brightkite and Wikipedia layers. I'm on the lookout for QR Codes to access stuff from now as well.

Talking of QR, M&S might be quietly embracing the possibilities there and there are some QR related artworks in the Invader exhibit, currently at the Lazarides Gallery. It'll be nice to see something that has been pretty common in Japan for 10 years or more finally catch on here. Looks as though Geolocation is being supported by HTML 5.0, leaning towards the mobile web. Next, the Web Of Things. The 2009 dConstruct might possibly tell us but, alas, I won't be there. This article on Waze, mapping with mobiles is quite interesting too.

Having my GMail popping into my inbox in realtime along with texts and tweets is cool and the access to my Google calendar is much better than it ever was on the Viewty. All my contacts are synched too so I just need to rationalise them to include phone numbers and e-mail addresses in one entry now. Maybe I'll finally get something done this year! Other than stare at my phone of course.

If you are bit of a Moleskine fan like me then you might be interested in the Escape Into Life site. Something unique in a world of cut and paste.

Check out the Icecreamists, coming to Selfridges. Viagra Ice Cream? With Absinthe!!! And cryogenic cocktails.
