Out And About In SE1
August 07, 2009

Despite it being sunny we spent the best part of three hours in the Olivier Theatre yesterday afternoon watching the excellent and hilarious England People Very Nice. I cried laughing. Richard Bean has written a fantastic play. They should film it and show it at diversity training sessions everywhere [a culturally clued up policeman even claims he's "binonacourse" during the play] . It would make a pretty good TV series actually. Although I suspect it would generally get misconstrued as racist. It isn't.

The credit should go to the cast and wardrobe department though. The wardrobe was in full view from where I was sitting and the amount of costumes back there was vast. It was a nice touch really. The set too was impressive. A similar concept to the Little Britain live show, with a plain [ish] wall of doors and the appropriate sets projected onto them. The National Theatre run is nearly over but I hope it continues elsewhere. Check out this page for a timeline of the play; from the Huguenots to the Bangladeshi's. Gilbert & George can tell you all about the area. Most of the play appears to be set in Fournier Street, Spitalfields, despite the constant mention of Bethnal Green.

We went to Constancia in Tanner Street for steaks afterwards. Bloody good steaks too but that place needs to sort out its air con. It was far too hot in there. We went there via Bermondsey Square to see what it has to offer... and in short it's not very much. There's Shortwave, bar and cinema, Del Aziz, a Sainsbury's local and a hotel. And that's it. The flats look quite nice but its a bit out of the way, unless you live there of course! I can't really see where anything else is likely to spring up either.

I really like these night shots. Check out Toby Smith's photo's. And on Eyestorm.

Right, I'm going spend some time seeing what else I can get my G1 to do then I'm going down the pub to watch some football.
