First Day Food
September 01, 2009

First morning and we go down to see what the Turkish breakfast is all about. A mixture of bread, goats cheese, tomato, melon and olives… Or there is cereal and honey to be had. And a very smiley waiter by the pool knocks up omelettes with a choice of cheese, tomato, mushroom, salami and pepper fillings. Or, as I had, the whole lot!

A collared dove flutters down mid omelette to drink at the edge of the pool and raises one or the other wing whilst stooping to drink in a sort of “Wahaaay” kind of manner. Weird!

After breakfast we head off to meet Alison, our rep, at another hotel along the river; and I manage to stick my foot in a pile of dog shit getting out of a mini bus. Not a good start to the day but we are all clued up on the local amenities and sites to see. We decide to stay close to the hotel for the first day and acclimatise ourselves to the heat. It’s in the low thirties. Nice.

Oddly, after all that breakfast we are hungry again come lunchtime so we stop at one of the restaurants on the square by the mosque. Koskem advertise Pide, Turkish pizza, which we practically lived on during our first visit to Turkey. We get one each, which is a mistake as they are far bigger than we recall.

Aside from sitting beside the hotel pool for the rest of the day, the only other thing we do is eat again. Before choosing somewhere to eat tonight, we saunter round to the Prince of Caunos to book their Lamb Tandir, which needs 24 hours warning and they only serve on Wednesdays.

Tonight's meal is at a lovely little restaurant called Kosk. It is across the road from the place we were in last night, with no view of the temples, a staff of three and it is amazing. We have meze’s to start again. It’s the thing to do!

Another yoghurt dish [well, the same one as yesterday actually – It’s a staple], another chilli plate, but a variation this time and we are given this one on the house just for enquiring about it. Couscous, fresh beans, olives, cheese and bread. I had meatballs and Sam had a lamb shish, which were both served with pilau rice and grilled onion and tomato. We are give a free plate of watermelon, apple and nectarine after and Sam’s Turkish coffee comes with a little arrangement of flowers around the saucer. We know we will be back here before the fortnight is through.
