Turtle Wipeout
September 03, 2009 After breakfast we decide to catch the dolmus to the other end of Iztuzu beach. It’s cheaper than the river taxi and this end is mostly frequented by locals so should be less crowded. Also there is a hospital for the wounded Loggerhead turtles that fall victim to outboard motors and fishing line. It’s a bit of a sorry sight. Some of them may be in their plastic tanks for up to two years while big holes in their shells heal up and I don’t know what will become of the one that has lost both front flippers. These turtles, that choose Iztuzu beach as their nesting ground, have been around for millions of years and are on the verge of extinction. After a busy day reading on a sunbed we get a dolmus back into Dalyan where I am promptly befriended by a dog that attempts to lick my legs off! And so it's dinner time again… And this time it is Saki; just a short walk from the Tezcan Hotel, where we are staying. Different inasmuch as there is no one trying to lure you in off the street to look at their menu. In fact, they don’t have a menu, just a cold cabinet with about 30 dishes in, which they talk you through and then warn you that you are ordering too much. Also, they have the cheapest house wine that we have encountered do far. Twenty Turkish Lire for a bottle. Which is approximately £8.00, but still more than I was expecting to pay before we set off on holiday. Despite the Turkish Lire being better value than the Euro Turkey was certainly cheaper 5 years ago. Lord help them if they finally join the EU. We only had the meze’s as we weren’t too hungry but we still ordered five before they stopped us. They all looked amazing. We opted for the stuffed aubergine, a yoghurt dish, courgette fritters, peppers and garlic and a couscous salad. Before we knew it we were the last ones left in the place and they were clearing up around us. Even the gecko over the lamp on the ceiling had gone to bed. It must have been the entertainment: The restaurant dog left bones everywhere and saw off a frog and the rose seller!
